My name is John Hewitt. You probably already know that (my name is everywhere on this blog) but consider this my introductory handshake. I’m restarting my blogging with a new address and some introductions are in order.
I write for a living. My current title is Content Strategist, but for most of my career I have been called a Technical Writer. My job is to plan and create content. For the most part, that content is focused on making difficult technical or financial concepts or processes easier to navigate and understand. The strategist part comes from the fact that I have a say in what information is delivered and how that information will be delivered. It’s a nice little recognition of my many, many years of delivering content.
I also write for enjoyment. I write both poetry and fiction, although I have moved more toward fiction over the past few years. That could change though, because the short-form nature of a blog is well suited toward poetry. You can expect to see some of that here, if it interests you. I am treating this as an old-school blog, which makes it more or less a repository for anything I want to say or pass on, be that poetry, fiction, thoughts, criticism, or just a description of my day or a link to someone else’s post. The blog has no real goal other than to be a place for me to say anything I want to say. I hope some people will find it interesting, but it is as much for me as for anyone else.
I am not active on a lot of social media. I have a Facebook account, and a Twitter account, and a few others, but I don’t have or need a lot of followers, and I rarely post. My goal is to make this my place to talk. I like that because it is under my control.
I am in my fifties. That is still unbelievable thing to me. It isn’t that I hate being that old, but I don’t feel like that much time has passed. Life is shorter than I ever thought it would be. I’m sure I’ll get into that in a later post though.
I am married and we have twins, a boy and a girl. I’m sure I’ll talk about them as we go, but for the sake of privacy I’ll stick to calling them, my wife, the boy, and the girl. We live in Tucson, Arizona. I was born and raised here and have only sporadically lived anywhere else. I sometimes fantasize about living in exotic places, especially other countries, but chances are I’m going to be in Tucson for the duration. This is my home.
I also spend a lot of time watching TV, going to movies, and reading books. I plan to write about those things too. I generally don’t write about things I dislike though, unless it really bothers me, so chances are it is going to be happy thoughts about whatever I am enjoying. It doesn’t mean I like everything, but if I genuinely don’t enjoy something, I don’t finish it. I just move along.
Politically, I lean to the left. I’ll probably talk about that from time to time so be warned. If I write something that makes you want to stop following me, there’s no need to tell me. Just go. Be well. The only purpose of telling me that you are unfollowing me is to try to make me feel bad. You aren’t going to change my views any more than I expect to change yours. This is literally my space to say what I think. The same goes for telling me to “stay in my lane” or stick to what I know. This blog, this blog right here, it is my lane. If you don’t like the politics, but are fine with the rest, just don’t read those posts. They will always be categorized as Politics.
I’m also going to write a lot of other stuff (some of it boring to everyone but me) because this is where I can do that. I’d love it if you enjoy reading it, but I’m fine if you don’t. I’m not here to create a following or to make money. I just like to write, and this is my place to do it,
So, that is a quick introduction to me. Welcome to my blog.
